She discovered it was time to find a better moniker. She though of mommydrinks.. and wondered.. what image does that conjure up? A woman at the computer with a shot of Vodka... maybe a nice glass of wine. Ok, maybe just a coffee. But always, always mommydrinks. After a while it's become... boring. The original idea was... "what is your style?"... and she would say "well, mommydrinks". It was funny for a while. But now... with her life on a platter.. a smorgasbord of opportunities and places. Too much for her to contain, all by herself. Places and spaces that need organizing, managing, arranging... care taking... and the dabbles of life that involve baking, and dressing, and acting ones age. Sometimes. Well... it presented itself to her in a way that she could not dismiss.. but only embrace. It was time, to look into the looking glass, to fall head first, and to announce...

Deborah Lloyd, the co-president and creative director of Kate Spade, shares her home upstate with Lonny Mag, and us! It's beautiful, elegant and serene. 21 questions with stylist Daniela Jung

Stylist Daniela Jung, graciously let me interview her via email this week. Daniela and I bonded during the presidential elections last year. She had me in hysterics at night, when we chatted via IM or text, dissecting the speeches between Obama and McCain, Palin and Biden. "Can you believe she just said that?" Then this year, the new obsession was the Real Housewives of New York City. Again... "Can you believe she just said that?"
I recently spent a weekend with her, her partner Jelle (who by the way plays in the awesome band The Cold Stone Dandies and is a photographer) and their very lovely daughter Nico. It was a fun weekend to say the least!
And by the way this is an interview with her, so without further adieu let's begin...

1. I think you have an amazing sense of style, so it only seems fitting that you ended up styling some of the most fashionable, and famous! How would you describe your signature look?

2. I heard you have collaborated with Mary Kate after you both really hit it off the first time you worked together. Tell me a bit about what you worked on with her.

I worked with MK and Ashley on their coffee table book "Influence", which was published last year -- it was a very collaborative effort as we have similar taste and gravitate towards the same things....I also work on their contemporary line "Elizabeth & James", which has become a mainstay in my wardrobe. These girls know what they're doing....

3. Who inspires you?

I can't really name a particular person, I get inspired by so many things - random people on the street, music, art, movies, great photography, travel...

4. what is your favorite store to shop in for work and what is your favorite store for just yourself?

well, now that it has finally arrived, I'd have to say Top Shop, but I also frequently hit Barneys, Zara and H&M for jobs. If I go shopping for myself, I usually go to vintage shops and flea markets, as going to regular shops makes me feel like I'm working! I love NY Vintage, Marmalade, Resurrection and Bless in New York - if in LA, I'll always check out Maxfield. I can also spend hours at Strand books...

5. What items do you have to splurge on?

Shoes! such a cliche, although I'm not a heels girl - but I'm obsessed with boots and always find new ones I like.

6. What are your favorite trends this season?

I'd like to think that I don't follow trends very much, but I do like that a lot of the fall collections were quite dark, androgynous, and layered, which reflects my personal style.

7. What trend would you most like to see disappear?

I call it "the bad 80's" - if you frequent American Apparel, you know what I mean....

8. What do you carry in your purse?

blackberry, keys, labello lip balm, tic tac's...nothing to exciting I'm afraid;-)

9. How do you keep in touch with the latest fashions?

By virtue of my job I get to see a lot of collections up close all the time, but I also follow a lot of blogs, as they give you an interesting perspective as to how people interpret current trends in fashion- and influence them!

10. Which magazines do you read? And which one is your favorite?

I like French Vogue, Tar, Self Service, Vice..my fav fashion mag is probably W, for the sheer fact that it exists in America!

11. Do you have any style tips specifically for me... LOL?

you have great personal style - you don't need any tips - honestly!

12. What is your favorite item in your closet?

Probably my Vivienne Westwood Seditionary Boots, I've had them for years, but I still love and wear them all the time. Another fav is a shearling coat from The Row that I pretty much wore every day this winter.

13. How did you get started as a stylist?

I started as an assistant at German Vogue and after I left, an art director friend suggested I should start styling - it was really a natural progression...

14. who are some of the most interesting people you've worked with.. just to name a few?

I'm a huge music fan, and worked as fashion director at Spin Magazine for five years - during that time I got to meet and work with so many of my fav bands and musicians - Morrisey, The Pixies, Kim Gordon, Jack White, Radiohead...also - working with Mick Rock, the legendary photographer - he's such a funny and humble man...

15. What is your favorite city for shopping?

Probably Berlin, because - although I'm german - it feels so foreign to me. shops have such different aesthetics, its really interesting and inspiring...

16. Who qualifies as a true fashion icon?

Kate Moss

17. Your from Germany... when did you move to the U.S? Was that before or after your gorgeous daughter Nico was born?

I came to NY the first time in 1996 and moved permanently in 1998, my daughter Nico was born here, but I always remind her that she's really European:-)

18. What do you think are the biggest differences between american style and german style, and then again, the similarities?

I would say they both like their comfort, although Germans are more conservative dressers - you won't see people past a certain age wearing sneakers for instance. it also seems that germans are somehow perpetually stuck in the 80's - when I look at german celeb magazines, I still see a lot of big hair and blue eyeshadow...

19. Who is your dream client living or dead?

Verushka! She's so iconic and interesting - I'd love to collaborate with her on something.... I actually met her once, years ago, at a mutual friends house for dinner - she brought a meatloaf that she made and afterwards I called all my friends and told them I had Verushka's meatloaf for dinner! It was surreal...

20. Whose closet would you most like to raid?

probably Verushka's - when I met her, she told me she had all this boxes of vintage clothes from the 60's and 70's - can you imagine?!

21. What do you enjoy most about being a stylist?

That I get to work on so many vastly different projects and and work with so many incredibly talented people. I get to travel, and I really appreciate that my job gives me an outlet to be creative. I always remind myself how lucky I am to get paid well for something I enjoy doing.

One thing I'll add... Tomatoes are out, and Pickles are in!

The lovely journey of a family of Peonies

In the beginning, or better yet, in their re-birth, they made a hearty try, struggling against a late frost. But as hard working families do, they pulled through, even if looking a bit tired in the beginning...

But the sun came, the earth warmed to with the glow, and it fed nutrients and earthworms into the soil, and the family of peonies grew...

It was time to share them with the world, so Lady Warfield, carefully picked the strongest families and gently packed them up in wet towels, taking the long and yet short journey from the country side to the city..

On their journey, they found delight in the warm glow cast upon them by the passerbyers and the passengers on the train. Master Dean was delighted, as was his little dog Tiki, to share them their Brooklyn friends, and adorn their home with their beauty...

And beautiful they look.. all together in their very own new home.

And the sun still shines on them, as more of them open up to absorb the light...

Look Mom, there's a flock of Giant birds on the Lawn

These are actually what's called Guinea hens. Crazy little birds, ugly, and yet, very uniquely interesting. They come up and visit us quite often. It's great pretending you have hens and horses, just because your neighbors do, and they are either so close, or just love to pop by for a cluck cluck cluck.

Here we go. The moment you have been waiting for! My stunning self squished into the second dress! And how lucky was I that in one week I had 3 occasions to go out and dress up in cute little silky dresses. This, my favorite piece, I wore Saturday Night to my friend Sonya's birthday. And what fun night! I made some new friends too.

My New Collection

If two can count as a collection, then I'm on my way.

Last week, I dipped into my earnings, and bought two, (yes two... one just would not do!) dresses by the very young, and very talented Margarita Saplala. I rarely go to Dear Fieldbinder, as I sometimes find there things don't work for me... but last week I peaked in and had a lot of success.

I stumbled upon these two dresses:

Still waiting for some photos from Saturday's night out, where I wore that first dress to my friend's birthday party.

Both dresses, were designed by the creative and talented Margarita Saplala. Her printed dresses are fresh and playful, but not really girly, because the patterns are geometric and feel more like drawings from her portfolio. It is so me!

American High Style: Fashioning a National Collection

Yes, Last thursday, I was invited to attend The Brooklym Museum who has partnered with the Metropolitan Museum of Art to present a major fashion exhibit showcasing 85 costumes, many of which haven't been on display in 20 years. An amazing collection, with pieces from Dior, Divecy, Elsa Scapareli the surrealist and Charles James, a cult figure of american design. Many of these costumes were worn by very special people, including, Queen Victoria.

Introducing My New Leather Jacket!

Purchased at a local store here in Brooklyn (lovely but way too expensive to normally walk in). Yes, it wasn't cheap, but not crazy either, like the 1,200 Pound version from Rick Owns on net-a-porter (see photo and link to left).

It took me a bit to make out the name... the tag says line. (with the period). But eventually I figured it out, and found it on the Bloomingdales site. It is Line, style "ellen". Found it also on Piperlime.

But mine's in black. I bet you could tell that from the pictures. Sure, I would love to afford the Rick Owens version. And I've rocked my Target version for some time. But I thought I deserved something in-between. I have been very good this year!

A Conversation with a my Favorite Fashionista

Florence is 9. She has been incorporating her mother's wardrobe with pieces her father brings home from work, and pared them up with her own bits and pieces, creating a look that is special to her self.

Last weekend when I tromped over to my dear friend Victoria's birthday party, I encountered the most stylish of us all. Florence. Decked out in her Top hat, Stella McCartney for gap jacket, and a pair of her moms high heels. Jealousy coursed through my body, wishing I myself had a cool jacket like that, and could walk in heels as graciously as she.

For shame.

I came to my senses, and realized, here, the little tomboy who used to run about with popsicle goo on her face, growing up along side my two wild boys, slinging mud and catching frogs at the beach, has matured into a lovely little Fashionista. I was impressed, to say the least. So as I teetered home late that night, I knew she must be my first interview, or conversation, that I would have with many of the future fashion divas to come.

So I sat down with Florence at the Brooklyn Hideaway, in the lovely patio, and we talked about individual style, and where she gets her ideas from...

Me: When did you start becoming interested in fashion?

flo: When I started this game called Style Savvy. It's a DS game, where you have your own boutique and you have to make people happy, with... um clothes you pick out by seeing what brand they like. Like girly pink, and wearing black with bow ties, and stuff like that.

Oh. Do you get to mix and match things on your own?

Yeah

And do you save it?

Well... You don't exactly save it... You put together an outfit that you think they might like. You press ok, then take a look. If they don't like it, you go back and find another outfit. You get 3 chances, but then if they don't like it on the 3rd chance, they just don't buy and leave. But if they do, they buy it and take their bag with them. Or they dress up. Like yesterday, I was playing on it, and this girl who really loves my shop, came and asked for a nice outfit to match her shoes, and she loved it and she wore it home. And it had a little tag hanging right here. (laughter)

You would really love this app called Closet for the iPhone...

Oh my mom has that!

Yeah? Well that would be good for you too. You could go and take pictures of your favorite pieces, not everything, that would be too time consuming... You could create outfits from those items. Some people don't need that, but some people need reminders of what works better with certain items.

So who is your favorite fashion influence?

My dad....(much clearing of throat from background) and mommy. (laughter)

But your daddy does brings home a lot of fun things for you.

Where does he get them?

Work

What does he do?

He's a journalist... he writes about fashion, pea coats... for boys and girls.

But mainly men right?

Well, yeah.

He works at a mens magazine right? (more laughter from mommy and Flo)

The other night I saw you at your mommies birthday, all dressed up. Will you describe you outfit you wore to her birthday?

A crewcuts little dress with tight skinny legging-thing jeans. A jacket.. gap kids... (whispering) Stella McCartney gap... an old fashioned jacket with heavy laces, and fancy buttons...

What did it remind you of?

Michael Jackson

Exactly... But you had that on...

and a top hat and glasses

Yeah top hat and little mirrored sunglasses

The top hat was dad's idea.

But what did you have on your feet???

High heels.. (giggles)

Do you know who they were.. they must have been something fancy since they came from your mommy...

no, they weren't a designer.

No.. oh but you looked really fashionable!

So... you are very young and you have the world ahead of you... but does fashion influence your world a lot? Might it be in your future?

Maybe... I don't know.

The Lady Sullivan Celebrates

Celebrations of celebrations! Have to say, Lady Tor knows how to throw a bash! She should go into event planning!

And took them quite away!

Entertaining Eva mixed the cocktails under the warm glow of decorations and laughter. The music was expertly and entertainingly DJ'd by Eli Jenney. The food was abundant and deserts a plenty. What more could one say? Yummy, and delicious. Fun and Hilarious. The Headaches were the reminder the next day.

Tarting Around the Kitchen, Again

I am stubborn. Also, my kids wanted to try the tart I made yesterday, so why not do it again. And this time, get it right. Although, there were no complaints last night!

(and all of this, using a hand mixer and dough blender)

Please don't label me "martha stewart", just because I started baking. I mean.. really, I only do it once a week.. if that. Maybe, Martha on crack. Ok. I'll settle for that. I'm just really enjoying this hobby. Something to zone out to. I get caught up in the process, and then of course the happy ending. There is so much stress these days, this is a great way for me to just blow off steam and relax.

(getting it right: Less jam, better distribution.)

My mom has been really helpful in this whole new world I've discovered. I call her up right in the middle of one of my projects... "hey, um Mom, is it normal to have dark specks in my Corn Meal?" or "ok, which one of these gadets that goes with this Kitchen Aide (she gave me) can I use to "fold" in the flour?" She really is helpful.

I was at my favorite cooking store yesterday in Brooklyn, The Cooks Companion, buying some needed gadgets, including one of those thingies for my mixer. She asked me if I had the Kitchen Aide where the head went back, or the one with the lever. I said the lever. She said I had the wrong gadget. The one I had there was for the one with the head that goes back. "Oh." She went and got the other one, and showed it to me. It was bigger. The one with the head that goes back is smaller. I said, "That's so funny, cause I just told my mom, that I remembered our old Kitchen Aide being a lot bigger than the one I have now." She argued that it wasn't. I insisted. I guess, in perspective, to a seven year old, it did look big bigger.

Ahhh. Perfection

now for the critics...

Outcome? "This tart is amazing", said jackson with his mouth full. Dean (in photo) didn't say a word, his mouth was full. Thumbs up!

A Tart for Tor

I'm so into baking, and trying things out, then hopefully adding my own special, inexperienced touch. But sometimes that touch doesn't go so well.

I absolutely love Smitten Kitchen, a lovely blog by Deb, who humors me with her wit and artfully made and presented bites. As I was trying to figure out what to make for my friend's birthday tonight, I started digging around for something that would be simple, and nice. Something where I wouldn't need a Mixer (kitchenaide, as mine is in the country) or a large quisenart. Can anyone say, old fashioned, wooden spoon? oh, maybe a little bit of the hand mixer. That's ok. So that's when I discovered her post on her "easy jam tart" (you can get the recipe there).

So things started out pretty well. But in afterthought, when I started applying my little dials of dow to the top, maybe I should have given a bigger ration of dow to the top, and pressed the bottom out more? And after it came out of the oven, I'm thinking, maybe I should have used less jam like she did? I have a feeling it's going to be way to jammy. Jammy?

Light and Flirty

It's been a long week.. oh what with taxes, kids, parties, taxes, and playing with this new iPhone app called Closet! So I haven't been quite "on-it" with the postings. What can I say? This girl is busy. I spent a good about of time trying to take pictures of each item in my closet.. and well, barely got past 1/8 of the stuff. I mean really? Talk about the perfect torture device. Going forward I'll take them as I get them... LOL. And maybe this app is stupid on an everyday level, but it's a great idea for trips.

So yes, I was too busy to do proper postings. But I have a slew of photos, and ideas. 1. Of course I have to share with you some of the items I photographed from my closet. 2. I've been just taking pictures of random things, I thought were interesting... so they might show themselves. 3. My plantings and garden stuff.. although, I might just put that on my other blog, I've been trying to work on... Go Girl! Garden! 4. And most exciting... I have to share the photos from last nights event! I went to this great private party at Coco de Mer, with my book club girls. It was our girls night out. And I came home with a special gift bag from Simon, one of the partners.

What a week!

And now I'm thinking of re-organizing this blog. Same thing really, but my categories are kind of random. I have some ideas that might help me be more productive. Something like this:

Oh but what joy gardening brings!

First I want to take a moment to thank all my followers for following, and welcome some of my more new recent followers! Hello! I am not always that great about blogging. Some weeks, I get one in every day. And other.. well, not so much. This week I'm back in Brooklyn, back to the school-freelance-life shuffle. I enjoyed my Easter week away, staying in the country. And I even did some planting. See below for some shots of before and after... and come back in a while, hmmm few weeks to see the progress... if any. The bunnies might get them.

Started by weeding out the nasty weeds for the eventual Herb Garden. Also planted some climbing roses along the back of the wall.

Then, packed up more soil, and some tomato plants, and headed to the enclosed orchard, to start a little vegi-garden. Some back breaking soil, I tell you! Rocks and spiders!!! Ugh. But in the end the results were good. Nothing a few tabs Alieve won't mend.

So, check back, and I'll take some updates, when I'm there next.

Brown Sugar Bundt Cake

It was ok. The kids loved it, but I have to say it was too sweet.

But here is the recipe for those interested.

A 10-inch tube or bundt pan

2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter, at room temp.
1/2 cup shortening
one 16-ounce box brown sugar (light or dark, about 2 1/4 cups)
1/2 cup sugar
5 large eggs (room temp)
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons vanilla Extract
1 cup chopped pecans
Cream Cheese Frosting (optional)

Position rack so cake sill sit in middle of oven and pre-heat oven to 350 degree F. Line the bottom of your tube pan with parchment paper and spray the sides and bottom with baking spray.

Cut up your butter and shortening into pats and drop into bowl of mixer. Start engines and cream on medium speed.

Combine sugars together in seperate bowl, then add them 1/2 cup at a time to the creamed mixture.. beating 1 to 2 minutes between additions.

Add the eggs, one at a time, beating 1 to 2 minutes between additions.

Dry Whisk your flour and baking powder together in seperate bowl.

After eggs are added, slow mixture down to low speed and add your flour mixture and milk to the batter, alternating between the two. After added, mix medium-high for 1 minute more.

Slow mixer and add vanilla extract. After 1 minute, slow mixture further and add pecans.

Pour batter into pan, and center on rack. Bake for 70 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool on rack for 15 minutes, then remove from pan, etc...

I used a Cream Cheese Frosting. But It would be much better without. Just pour jared peaches and juice over it.

Taking a break in Brooklyn is so easy, so peaceful, so.... yummy.

Tor and I went to pick up my gorgeous old Raliegh from the bike shop, and were famished so we decided to check out the semi-new "prime meats" that opened down on Court Street in Carroll Gardens. I happen to be a vegi-fish-bacon-tarian, so a place sounding like a joint that's named for, well, meats that sound like they hack a cow out back... well you would think it not in my liking. However, they have a great salad menu, yummy soups, breakfast choices...

And Lovely lovely Bloody Mary's! That alone could have been a meal. Yum.

There's nothing like a little retail therapy... so why not do some in between Doctor appointments? That way, when I go to get my fanny checked, I can focus on something more fun, like going home and trying on my new purchases.

They had a fabulous section of "thrift store" shoes and boots. I gravitated towards the men's black boots. These are sooo roomy and comphy with a western, Jerry Lee, Rock-a-billy look... I just couldn't resist. And soooo affordable. The cheap updated glam Elvis sunglasses work well too!

Last Tuesday night, I found my self eating the most delicious food at a small and fabulous Esquire Party.

Hosted at the newly opened restaurant Faustina in the Cooper Square Hotel, the food by Chef Scott Conant and Klaus Ortlieb was amazing. Oysters on the half shell with a mojito like garnish... The most delicous Polenta with Mushrooms... And ravioli to die for. Yum.

Oh, and my dearest friends Victoria & Nick (Sullivan), Daniela & Jelle and my fabulous husband, Mark were all there. What could be better! Yummy food, yummy People!

Victoria's highlight of the evening.. meeting with Phillip Lim. She happened to be wearing on of his pieces.

Course we are so lazy with our iPhones these days we forget to bring cameras, then we are left to experiment with candles to get some light on the picture in the back of a dark bar.

This is my favorite moment, when Tor teasingly left us stranded as she teetered off with two young boys.

But she came back... and this is my experimental shot of her eyes in the cab home.

Mamma Cooked a Bundt Cake

I've taken baking by the reins, and I'm just going for it! My first, was the Peach and Rasberry Tart, which I modified into the Pear and Blueberry Tart. So far my favorite. But this weekend I baked a "Sour Cream Pound Cake", which I call "Lemon Bundt Cake". It's so lemony, the name needed to be modified. And I used my new Bundt pan, so I had to add that into it's newly modified name.

When I first started this new hobby, I used a recipe (for the Rasberry tart) that while good, left out a whole lot of information. How is one novice supposed to know what "creaming" is, or the finesse of "adding eggs", or yet the importance of doing it correctly. I didn't know to alternate wet and dry ingredients... slowly. To let the batter flow gently into the pan, then gently tap it to let it belch the bubbles out. Also, about "sifting". How you really don't need to do that much anymore as the way flour has been produced lately, it already has the lumps out. So you can just "whisk it". Then measure it. Always measure after you whisk. So

So how did I find out all this? I found this amazing book, All Cakes Considered, by Melissa Grey, a writer for the radio show All Things Considered. She made each of these recipes and brought them into work every monday for her co-workers. Then decided to make a cook book out of them all. But I just love the way she broke down her grannies recipes, explaining all that stuff that confused me. And in a fun way!

Now it's my goal, to go through each and every recipe, and do them. To learn, to love, and to share with my family, friends and you.

The Best thing about Sunday Nights Oscar...

ok, besides the awesome fact that Kathryn Bigelow won the Oscar for best director of 'The Hurt Locker' and it won best picture (eat your heart out James), and Christoph Waltz for best supporting actor of 'Inglourious Basterds', oh yeah, and ok, Sandra Bullock's amazing speach.

The most fun I had was when my pulse started racing at the site of these two lovelies...

And, shameful but true, Taylor Lautner. It's not that I think he's all that... I mean he's cute, but probably too short, and definitely too young. But when they panned him sitting in the audience, even though he was wearing a tux, I just kept picturing his naked torso.

I actually pride myself in the fact that I don't have a "type". That should scare my husband. Shhhh. Don't tell him. Actually, he has nothing to worry about. And don't think I wrote that because I'm afraid he'll read this. He won't.

For those of you who caught the oscars version of the 2009 memorial last night... did they leave out some people or what? Plus it was just, lame. While on the other hand, the SAG Awards knocked it out of the stadium. Get the tissues ready...

Muse: live at Madison Square Garden

Friday night I went with Daniela to see one of my favorite bands, Muse. I had purchased the tickets pre-sale online through the bands site. Something quite rare for me. I'm usually the last to find out about something. But I made it. It didn't give me an option as to were to sit so I just selected the slightly higher priced ticket.

So after months of waiting, the day arrived. When we got there we were turned away at the front and told we needed to go around the side!

Oops. Without even realizing it I got the way cool standing only tickets! Right up and close!

All I have to say is amazing! Truly a spectacular performance and talent.

I took all these photos from my iPhone and posted this post via iPhone. I also took some amazing video, although the sound is distorted at time, due to the fact that we were just so close to the amps. Yes my ears are still ringing!

A fond adieu my friends. I'm off to spend some time relaxing in the sun, hiking in the rainforest, spraying bugs off my legs, and hopefully getting a massage or two.

I will miss Tiki, but she will be lovingly taken care of by Lady Tor and Lord Nick, and their adorable children.

I must say a fond farewell to Alexander McQueen, who so sadly committed suicide yesterday (Thursday) after loosing his mother recently. If the two are related, I don't know. But the loss of such a creative geneious will be felt strongly among his fashion peers and followers. His innovative designs and theatrical fashion shows.

Tired of blonde, I've moved back to brunette.. so dark it's almost black. But funny, so did some other short haired blondes (i.e. Agnes). I really didn't realize this. I only just discovered it, when trying to fix my self-hair cut, looking for some samples to show my hair cutter. I was looking for photos of iris strubegger, as I remember she had a great new hair cut last summer. Well, we will be sitting around grumbling as New York City has decided to close schools, just in case, it's too miserable out tomorrow (Wednesday). I needed a day to myself for my zen project of organizing and packing for two boys, and myself. How Rude!

So while I begrudge the cold and impending storm.. I gaze longlingly at these photos of where I'll be next week; Manuel Antonio National Park.

We are staying just outside Manuel Antonio National Park, at a resort, (yes, I deserve a resort, dammit!) which somehow maintains its commitment to the environment, without sacrificing luxuries and amenities. The rooms are all situated in buildings that were constructed to fit around existing trees. It maintains "the highest level of certified sustainability." Among its many eco efforts, the resort uses solar power to heat water; recycles its waste water for use in irrigation; and employs recycled-plastic roof tiles made from discarded bags used in the banana industry.

I can't wait to try a guaro mojito, which is prepared with aguardiente (Costa Rican liquor made with sugarcane).

I want to go to there!

Well, guys and gals... I'm going to Costa Rica with my Man and my boys. We Leave Friday!

Plans... change don't they? I just found out that we will be returning on separate planes! Yes, we connect back through Houston to NY. And my Man just discovered, he accidentally booked 2 on a different flight. Oddly, two flights leave the same time from Houston, same Airline, and yet one goes to Newark, and the other Laguardia.

Quite so.

So He shall travel with son number 1. And I shall travel with son number 2. Lets hope that is thee highlight of surprises on our trip.

I will take photos and post when I get back. But that said, don't expect any postings, next week (Feb 15-19).

2) Studs. I got mine online at eleathersupply.com (Pyramid Spots ½ in) aprox 70
3) An Exacto blade
4) Pliers, Needlenose pliers, whichever works

Make a plan. Ok, so I'm still trying to decide if I should go along the front seam that runs along the top of the foot. But I like it the way it is. So better let it go.

A Tragic and Romantic Letter...

Last night we were watching Ken Burns Documentary, The Civil War. Told from imagery using photographs, maps and illustrations... accompandied by music, speech, and historical context, narrated by a cast of famous actors: Julie Harris, Charlie McDowell, Arthur Miller, Jason Robards, Sam Waterston as Lincoln, and many others....

In those days people wrote… diaries, letters, and journals. There are letters, not unbiased, from the leaders of the time; the politicians and generals. And most touching, the letters from the wives and sweethearts of the soldiers, the nurses and doctors, newspaper editors and farmers.

And most of all ( and here is the heartbreaker ) there are the words of the soldiers. It is in the lives of the average people caught up in these events, that they believe in, above all. To risk their lives for the cause of the union, or the cause of their way of life.

Are you ready? Sit down, take a sip your coffee... and read this letter through. I implore you. As it was being narrated, I wasn't truly paying attention in the beginning.. but then the words started to seep through my distraction, and I felt such a tremendous sorrow, rooted to my seat, frightened with emotion.

This letter is from Sullivan Ballou, a major in the United States Army in the Union Army, to his 24-year-old wife:

July the 14th, 1861

Washington D.C.

My very dear Sarah:

The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days—perhaps tomorrow. Lest I should not be able to write you again, I feel impelled to write lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more.

Our movement may be one of a few days duration and full of pleasure—and it may be one of severe conflict and death to me. Not my will, but thine O God, be done. If it is necessary that I should fall on the battlefield for my country, I am ready. I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in, the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I've been obessesing with rivets and studs these days. I found this great belt at shopbop.com, I've yet to wear:

And I just ordered these punk ballet slippers from Bona Drag I can't wait to slip on.

So now that I've bought the products, I want to make some of my own! I kept thinking about my old leather biker jacket that I bought at a Harley place back in the mid '80's down in South Carolina.. then stupidly sold to my girlfriend somewhere in the mid 90's. Dumb move. She has no intention of selling it back.

Well, when I had it, I had lovingly applied diamond rivets to the colar, and along the edge of the zipper. I also used bic lighter tops for the sleve. I'll try to find a picture of it, to post, but so far I can't find one. But don't hold your breath.

But I had an idea....So yesterday I ordered online from eleather supply Company, a whole bunch of rivets. I plan on doing this cheap but cute leather jacket I got at Target last year. And... a pair of UGG boots. I'm embarrassed to say I got a pair. I don't know why.. I just felt I needed warm throw me ons... but their just so UGG. I need to punk them out. A bit like these boots:

The Vampire Diaries is Truly Blood worthy

Ok, so I'm a little late to stumble upon CW's "The Vampire Diaries". I've clearly embraced the Vampire genre early on. I was one of the first to read Anne Rice's Vampire books (Interview with a Vampire) in the early 80's. She even autographed it for me. And thankfully it survived the drop in the bath. However, after going through her whole set of vampire and witch novels, long and on an on... somewhere in the early 90's, I retired from Vampire lore.

But 1, maybe 2 years ago when Someone recommended Stephanie Meyer's books, I thought, why not? So I curled up, awakened those vampire sensitivities and read through them all at lightening speed. Oh sure they are flawed, and what not. But entertaining and romantic... yes they are. And yes, I have a soft spot for the movies... even with their flaws. Um, Edward is so... serious. And Jake is so... (blush). Oh, and jailbait.

But as I'm not a high school girl, I wanted a bit more punch, a bit more action, and yes... some sex. So I did some research, and found a few other Authors I liked, that weren't to tawdry, and some very well written. I especially like Jennifer Rardin's series, "Once bitten, Twice Shy"; Karen Chance's series "Touch the Dark", and Jeaniene Frost's "One Foot in the Grave". Laurel K. Hamilton is pretty damn good too.. but she's been taking some aphrodisiacs lately so her novels have so much sex, you forget she's writing about monsters sometimes.

I have read the first book of the Sookie Stackhouse series, "True Blood", but wasn't loving it. SO I finally rented True Blood on DVD, and I am now up to my 5th episode. It's not bad. Not great.. but I'm enjoying it. And I guess I'll pick up the books again as well.
A note on True Blood. The way they do their "bad guy", "bad vamp" special effects is a little hokey. It looks cheap.

Glamour takes a call

So the other night, I, as I said stumbled upon "the Vampire Diaries". Again, way behind, and just starting from the beginning. It's kind of like, Dawson's Creek meets True Blood... It's for the high school crowd. But you know what. So far I like it better than True Blood. The two lead guys, Ian Somerhalder (from Lost) and Paul Wesley (from the land of hunksville) are terribly dreamy. And very good actors. "yeah they are!" The special effects are good, and subtle. And that's how I like it.

I just like it. I can't wait to see more.

... And I want to be young and sexy. And have a vampire for a boyfriend. Although, I like wolf boys too.

and btw, purple and black is a great vampire color.

A mix of movie reviews from last weeks screening, in mommydrinks brooklyn hideaway. Um, except Avatar which was viewed big screen in the theater, with special glasses.

TEMPEST (1982)

An American comedy-drama directed by Paul Mazursky. It's a loose adaptation of the William Shakespeare play, The Tempest. Staring John Cassavetes, Gena Rowlands, Susan Sarandon and Molly Ringwald in her debut feature film.

It's fun to see Molly when she was cute and young. Susan is sexy as ever. Raul Julia has a small and creepy role. But I never quite feel any kind of sympathy for Philip (played by John Cassavetes). I don't get his "enlightenment". But the island of Kalibanos is gorgeous, and I'm aching for some sun

Vincent Canby (The New York Times),gave it an all out scathing review, which I don't argue with too severely… "Tempest is an overblown, farcified freak of a film. Experiencing it is like watching a 10-ton canary as it attempts to become airborne. It lumbers up and down the runway tirelessly, but never once succeeds in getting both feet off the ground at the same time. The spectacle is amusing in isolated moments but, finally, exhausting."

AVATAR, 3D,(2009)

A science fiction epic written and directed by James Cameron and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez and Stephen Lang.

Wow, and incredible piece of work. SO real. So beautiful. And in 3D! Quite imaginative, and absorbing.

Avatar's has so many social and political themes running through it. Villainous American characters representing militarism, capitalism... The "profound show of resistance to capitalism and the struggle for the defense of nature" [ Evo Morales ]. "If you can get a theater full of people in Kentucky to stand and applaud the defeat of their country in war, then you've got some amazing special effects." [ Russell D. Moore ]

I mean really, there you are rooting for the "opposite" side. But really, it's not about "Americans", or "our kind" against them. It's about corruption, power hungry corporations against nature. Evil vs. Good. It's about global warming, and machine vs. nature.

Enough said. I loved it. I even shed a tear. Do not laugh.

DISTRICT 9, (2009)

Ok, I thought my husband was crazy for bringing this home. First 15 minutes I was grossed out, and disgusted. Who are these nasty bug like aliens? I asked myself, and glared at him. Yuk! But then something happened... My feelings suddenly, quite suddenly changed. I was struck with how I went from one moment not be able to empathize with them, to completely empathizing with them.. rooting for them, and disgusted with the nature of "our kind".

District 9 is a science fiction thriller film directed by Neill Blomkamp, written by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell; and produced by Peter Jackson. The film stars Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope and David James. Copley plays the role of Wikus Van De Merwe, an Afrikaner bureaucrat assigned to relocate a race of extraterrestrial creatures, derogatorily referred to as "prawns", from District 9, a military-guarded slum in Johannesburg, South Africa, to an internment camp outside the city.

District 9 is was inspired by historical events that took place in South Africa during the apartheid era, with the film's title particularly referencing District Six. District Six, an inner-city residential area in Cape Town, was declared a "whites only" area by the government in 1966, with 60,000 people forcibly removed and relocated to Cape Flats, 15 miles away.

Heart Wrenching and absolutely devastating. And yet, entertaining. Brilliant.

Last week I went to my friend director Eva Midgely's private screening for her film Peep Show in Soho, which she wrote and directed. Eva also played some of her earlier works from Erotic Moments, an award-winning series of seven short films, and the tease film Honey and Bunny.

The presentation took place at ION Studio, surrounded by her husband and longtime collaborator John Midgley’s fantastic, erotic and pre-raphalite series titled “Rapture”.

I can't help it, but my favorite is Honey and Bunny. I love the outfits, very sexy and luxurious, and the two girls that act out their little fantasies on each other are darling. Eva did this film a few years ago, also with John, for the luxurious lingerie and erotic toy Boutique, Coco de mer.

This past summer, we lucked out when John graced my husband with this print from the "Rapture" series. I'm thinking it needs a elaborate renaissance gold frame!

A Tart goes to Heaven

Lately, I'm pretending to be Suzi Crocker... or The Contessa Suzanne... or... something of that nature. I always referred to myself when it came to baking and stitching as, Martha on Crack. It's like it almost looks perfect, but if it looks perfect, something inside is not quite right. However, I've finally come a long way...

Last weekend I tried out this recipe. Raspberry Peach Tart. Sounded delicious. Everything seemed to go well, but I had two main problems. One, I forgot to sift the flour. How bad could that be? And two, the peaches weren't perfectly ripe. Oh well… we must press on.

It didn't come out that bad, and looked awfully pretty. It started out kind of dry, IMHO,but the longer it sat, those Raspberries blended nicely in and made it juicier.

So, I thought, yum. This is a good idea. What if I changed a few things. Instead of Peaches and Raspberries, how about, Pears and Blueberries. I don't know? Why not. Just a guess. And this time, when I prepared the fruit, I added a little sugar, a dash of salt, and some cinnamon. The sugar idea I got from my friend, as she always puts sugar on her strawberries, and the salt, I had read about on another recipe. The cinnamon was my idea. Why not? The thing is, this recipe is lacking in description. I like recipes that tell you what something should look like, or give you tips. This is sort of made for someone who already knows what they're doing. So I had to play with it a few times.

My son Dean, stepped in and helped me decorate the top with the pears and blueberries. Oh, and this time, I did not forget to sift the flour.

   I stumbled upon Catskill Kiwi blog by Toni a few weeks ago, and I still haven't been able to explore every nook and cranny.
   I love it!!! Her tagline: "An Urban Girl goes City Country City Country". I feel a kindred spirt, in that, I have recently been spending time up and out of NYC, not quite the catskills, but the Hudson Valley... Cold Springs and Garrison. We inherited a little "nest" from Grandfather that we are tenderly nurturing, for a time. Enjoying the winter, with more snow there, than in Brooklyn.
   The kids too, get to find some time sledding on our little bunny slope. I'm inspired to try snow boarding.. maybe.
   But in the mean time, I've been baking! (see tomorrow's post) And I will be breaking out the hoe and shovel and clippers and whatever else it takes, to start pruning, and gardening.

Let's hope the back doesn't give out!

A pathetic attempt at an excuse...

Ok, well I've been a total slacker! Yes it's true. And last year was such a good year! Why is it every year starts and I say to myself, this is going to be a good year. Bad shit will just end. Well, bad shit never ends, it's just a matter of it being well balanced with good shit. And even better when the percentage is down to 30%, or less. Well last year a lot of bad shit happened. Well one thing in particular. And it took most of our emotional and in the end physical strength to carry on. And if you've ever lost a parent, then you know what I'm talking about. There is so much one goes through. This wasn't my parent, but my husbands parent. Grandpa Warfield.

I won't get into more details, but just to say, just when you think your moving ahead, you get thrown back two or three steps. And then depending on your personality, you get... unmotivated.

I tend to over-fill my plate. Then find myself confused as to what to do first. So I paralyze myself, get in bed, or spread out on the couch, with small fluffy friend (tiki, not so fluffy but very soft) and read.

Ok, another hour or two wasted. Oh, wait, wasn't I going to post that great blog idea today? Or I know, I was going to spend 2 hours writing. Did I mention I'm working on a book? I have 25,000 words so far... goal 40,000.

Oh but darn, there was that web design project I needed to attend to, and then the one I'm volunteering to do. When will I get to that one. Oh, well, tomorrow... there is always tomorrow.

I'm done with all this procrastination! Damn it! (excuse the cussing, I'm feeling peppy) I really will begin anew! And why not! I started Pilates for the first time 2 weeks ago. I have taken my 4th class today! And I feel... sore, but solid. Solid is a good word for it. I have also started to pay attention to what goes in my mouth. To be accountable for it. I was always good at this.. I could always count how many shots of Tequila I had. Was that 8?

But of late, I have slipped. Oh the holidays is the season to indulge. And my great friends baking, then me, me of all people baking too! I'm actually quite good at it! Who knew!?? Now I just need to learn to bake it and give it away!

So, on that note.. of productivity, doing things for oneself, getting ahead instead of behind... I am going to make a commitment, of at least 3 posts a week. Maybe more.. but never less.

I just wanted to wish everyone that stops by a happy holiday. I've been terribly busy the last few weeks with preparations, and other all consuming projects, that I haven't been able to post as frequently as I like to.

I'm hoping with the new year, I'll be able to kick it back in gear, as I really enjoy doing this, and I enjoy reading your blogs as well! I love my little blogging community. But it really only works from both ends. I've been terrible at getting out there and communicating to my blog friends. So my first new years resolution is to get back on it!

They look like the Rice Krispies elves, however I just found they call them Knee Hugger Pixie Elves, and they are from the 50's or 60's. The first single from the Virgins self-titled album "The Virgins" which was released on June 3,2008. The video has that gritty, grainy effect that can only come from taping something on TV straight to a used VHS, if you can remember back that far… And the video is styled after one of those late night cable adult shows, like the Robyn Bird show, or one on Channel J, where the host introduces dancers from different gender, (remember Ugly George?). Each dancer does their bit, and at the end they all sit around the host, and talk and wish everyone goodbye.

I can't imagine that the boys in the Virgins ever saw one of these late night shows back in the day. They seemed to dissapear in the late 90's. I have a feeling the director had something to do with it...

Have you ever seen or heard of "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains"?

It was a missing paramount picture from 1981.

An incredible Cast!!!

Starring Diane Lane, Laura Dern and Marin Kanter as teen girls in a punk band.
The film also featured Ray Winstone (of sexy beast), Christine Lahti, ex-Sex Pistols Steve Jones and Paul Cook, along with Paul Simonon from The Clash, Vince Welnick and Fee Waybill from The Tubes.

Produced by Joe Roth, who now runs disney. Directed by Lou Adler, directed up in smoke. And written by Nancy Dowd, who also wrote Slapshot, and coming home.

It's about a teen girl band, who run away from home, who open up for some english punkers and a washed up metal act. Through the media, they become stars.. their look and attitude inspiring girls everywhere... rise to fame, only to crash and burn, and yet they find true success from the whole process.

Made in 1980.. it wasn't released. But it aired on late night tv a few times.

Now finally, it's been released (2007), 18 years after it was made. If you want to know more about this movie and why it was unfortunately not released to theaters, see documentary below.

I discovered it doing one of those netflix searches... looking at one movie that brought up another... and came across it. I would have loved this movie if I had seen it, and would have died my hair and become a Skunk.

I really enjoyed it, and I highly recommend it to all!

Thank you for all your lovely comments ladies! Ah... to be out in the country breathing fresh air! And it really was a great group of women. In the evenings we relaxed and made big yummy meals (well I didn't, I cleaned the dishes), drank loads of red wine, played ping pong and Karaoke. During the day we relaxed more, and went to town and explored the old antique and vintage stores. A few ladies went on a hike, and thankfully found their way back home. And of course, I played dress up, trying to be the "Lady of the Manor". At least for a day.

clothing swap steals

A few weeks back, my lovely friend Victoria decided to have a clothing swap. We were nervous, because we'd never done this before. And I thought all my cast off clothing would be useless and not wanted by my friends, let alone a few new faces. I'm also much taller and broader in the shoulders, and NO I don't wear a size 4 pants, so what could anyone possibly share with me??!! But as it turns out, it went fabulously. First thing I acquired was this great jacket in the picture above. The label says River Island. Never heard of it before, but it's so soft and scrumptious. Also the belt. Looks like some fancy belt with the silver lion, but I've never heard of the label as well, but it's made in England. Ok, so the rest of it is mine. But I love the belt and jacket with my wool vest I bought last year.

In the end, most of what I made off with were scarfs and belts. But there are a few summer skirts from calypso (ala Rikke), and some crazy cotton summer tube dresses and shirts by Darryl K, as Darryl joined us as well, and insisted I could work them into my wardrobe. We'll see next summer.

So, in conclusion... clothing swaps rock. I highly recommend them!

I have to agree with Gale:

Wow...just watched the Proenza Schouler video of their runway show.
I had liked it when I saw the photos, but shit....when u see the clothes move, you realise how phenomenally talented these designers are...how they create so much texture and movement through print and color and shine. Seeing it flat you miss 50% of the story.
I have just been taking it for granted for so long, as we are so spoiled by the available instantaneous/copious quantity of reference material, that you no longer digest the deftly played artisnal skills.
I am amazed.

Sweet William

Last week, I took a detour, with friend Tor, to drop off one of her fab nightlights, at a little store called Sweet William, in williamsburg brooklyn. It's a darling little children's clothing store that carries independent designers, with the highest quality, and environmentally and ethically responsible manufacturers. Tor's little white rabbit will fit in perfectly!

My favorite, were 3 things. 2 lovely stuffed animals by hansa, and a blue bird in it's next with eggs, by waldorf handworks.

Your never too old for stuffed animals!!
